Audit Shows Schools are Underfunded
An audit says West Virginia underfunded 36 county school systems by $52 million over seven years, while overfunding 19 counties by $22 million. In the audit released Sunday, the legislative auditor’s office says the Department of Education didn’t follow the school aid formula, causing a net underfunding of $30.1 million in budget years 2009 through 2015. The audit says Kanawha County was underfunded by $5.3 million, the most across 55 counties. The most overfunded county, Monongalia, received $1.4 million extra. The audit says officials misinterpreted school aid changes.
