High School Graduation Ceremony Plans – Spring 2020
We understand what huge stepping stone a young adults High School Graduation is, and even those the dates have change in these trying time they will still get to don their cap and gown. The following are new list of graduation plans and dates. Unfortunately some schools have had to change their plans, dates, and times!!! We will update our list as soon as the schools release an official announcement so make sure to check back!!!
-Clay County High School July 23rd
-Meadow Bridge High School – August 1st 9:30am at the High School Football Field
-Midland Trail High School – August 1st 1:30pm at the High School Football Field
-Oak Hill High School – August 1st 6:00pm at the High School Football Field
* If conditions permit, parents will be seated in the bleachers to view the event. If that is not possible then parents will be permitted to attend the ceremony and watch their student graduate via a jumbo screen provided by the county. The ceremony will also be streamed on Facebook live.
-Richwood High School – July 17th at 7:00pm at Dean Memorial Field. In case of rain, the ceremony will be moved to July 18th at 2:00 PM at Dean Memorial Field.
-Nicholas County High School – Alternate Dates – July 18 at 7:00 PM at the Veterans Memorial Stadium. In case of rain, the ceremony will be moved to July 19th at 2:00 PM at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Kanawha County Summer Food Programs – Now through August 7th
Kanawha County Schools will be offering Summer Food Programs for children 18 years old and younger. All pick-up location will be open on Monday or Tuesday except for the first week pick-up will only be available on Monday due to election day. The meals will include breakfast and lunch boxes for five days and milk. The meals will last up to 10 day, but the refrigerated item must be refrigerated within two hours of pick-up!!! Parents just pull up to the tent at their designated location check-in, open their trunk or side door, the staff will load the meals and close the door. Putnam County Summer Food Service Program – Every Wednesday June 17th through August 12th
Putnam County Schools FREE Summer Food Service Program for children 18 years and younger will start on Wednesday June 17th. The 5-day meal boxes will be provided and offered to all Putnam County students who would like to participate by parent pickup only. The meal boxes allow families to pick up a week’s worth of meals once a week, every Wednesday, from 10:00am – 12:00pm at the following locations…….
-Hurricane High School
-GW Middle School
-Poca Middle School
-Scott Depot Park & Ride (located beside of Sheetz)
For more information about the Summer Food Service Program, please contact the Putnam County Schools Child Nutrition Office at (304)586-0500. Parents may also text the word “food” to 877-877, this will prompt the user to type a zip code and it generates all the feeding sites that are around their community.
Finally some pools in our area will be opening for the 2020 season, however keep in mind they are under strict guidelines to keep everyone safe and splashing all summer long. Unfortunately some of our favorite swimming spots will not be opened for the season please list below.
–Coonskin Pool will open this weekend Saturday and Sunday June 13th and 14th and will open for the season Tuesday June 16th. The cost is Adults $5.00, Seniors $2.00, Children 4 – 12 years old &2.00, and 3 and under free, Military ID $2.00, and YMCA $2.00. However, this year there are strict guidelines and time slot that patrons MUST follow including……
-100 patron limit at one time, first come first serve.
-Time slots are as follows: 11-2 and 2:30-5:30. No admittance after 1:00pm for the first time slot, no admittance after 4:30 for the second time slot. This window of time includes time spent in locker rooms.
-Pool and locker rooms will be cleared at the end of each time slot
-Patrons are asked to come ready to swim
-Social distancing will be practiced while waiting in line
-Patron health screening and temperature reading at the door
-Age restriction: Must be 16 to come in without an adult
-Designated spaces within the yard for each group, spaced 6 feet apart
-Personal items must stay in personal designated area of the yard(this includes chairs)
-Group size no larger than 6
-Designated entrance(ramp) and exit(steps)
-Designated walkways to enter and exit the facility
-Staff are mandated to wear face coverings
-No concession stand
-No shared flotation devices available for use
-Chairs will not be provided; participants must provide their own chairs
-No shared tables available for use
-Individual packaged snacks and drinks available for purchase
-No slide access
-Additional staff to maintain sanitary standards; handrails, ladders, lifeguard stands, hard surfaces, bathrooms/locker rooms.
No inflatables, no exceptions. This includes water wings, rings, infant floats, etc. Foam and life jacket flotation devices only.

-Hurricane City Park Sprayground is now open Monday through Saturday 10:00am – 6:00pm and Sunday 1:00pm – 6:00pm. Here are a few details to keep in mind while cooling off this summer….. Admission FREE for Putnam County residents and $3.00 for non-Putnam County residents, Private parties are available from 6:15pm -8:15pm each evening (cost is $130). Rules and Regulations….
• Pool will be open 3 sessions daily 10:00am -1:00pm, 2:00pm -5:00pm, and 6:00pm – 9:00pm
• Maximum occupancy per session 75
• Pool will be closed 1 hour between sessions for cleaning and sanitation
• You are encourage to bring your own chairs. There will be some available, but are limited and first come first serve.
• You will be able to reserve for sessions through schedulicity.com. This is NOT active yet and will not be active for reservations until 24 hours before the pool is open. You will only be allowed to register 24 hours before each session. Example you want to reserve 4 spots for the 2:00pm -5:00pm time slot for Saturday June 27th. You wont be able to reserve this until after 2:00pm on Friday June 26th. If you are unable to register using this app you can contact the pool at (304)727-1768. Again you can only register 24 hours before your time slot.
• When coming to the pool and leaving the pool we request that you social distance and wear mask. Mask are not to be worn while swimming in the pool.
• Admission to the pool will be $3 per session for anyone over the age of 4. When registering your session you do not need to register children under the age of 4
– Little Creek Pool will open today Friday July 3rd . Admission is $4.00 for Adults 16 and older, $3.00 for kids 15 and younger, and $3.00 for Seniors. Hours are from 11:00am – 5:00pm

Annual Furniture Drive – Every Other Saturday Starting June 13th
A 30 year old tradition to help our neighbors will continue starting this Saturday and will run through August every other Saturday. First Presbyterian Church of South Charleston and Heart & Hand Outreach Ministries have teamed up once again for their Furniture Mission. Donations of used furniture or appliances in good condition will be accepted from 9:00am – 1:00pm at 212 D Street in South Charleston. Never Fear the Cookies are here!!! Girl Scouts of Black Diamond Council have announced that cookies are available again after a three-month hiatus due to COVID-19. Jonesing for a Thin Mint??? You can pick-up cookies at the Girl Scouts of Black Diamond Council Office located at 321 Virginia Street West in Charleston!!! Cookie pickup will be available Monday through Thursday from 8:00am – 4:30pm. If you’d like to place an order, please email Cookies@BDGSC.org. Also, keep your eyes open for local troop’s cookie booths, because they will be returning in the next few weeks.
