Remainder of Capitol Dome Contract is Canceled

The state has canceled a nearly $11 million contract to repair damage to the state Capitol dome. The Gazette-Mail reports that the state’s decision was based on the contractor’s inability to comply with design requirements for exterior scaffolding to be constructed to complete the project. West Virginia Department of Administration spokeswoman Diane Holley-Brown says the department and contractor mutually agreed to terminate the contract. She says the contractor determined it couldn’t comply with a requirement that the exterior scaffolding not come in contact with the cladding of the Capitol dome. Concerns had been raised that the contractor’s proposed design for exterior scaffolding could potentially cause additional damage to the dome. As part of the agreement, the state will pay the contractor $1.67 million for work completed.
