State police lose one of their own
West Virginia State Police say a trooper has passed away after experiencing an unspecified medical problem during physical fitness training. 50-year-old First Sgt. Joseph G. Portaro of Clarksburg had been participating in training near the State Police Academy grounds in Institute.
Portaro was a 17-year State Police veteran. He had been assigned to the State Police Academy as deputy director of training. He was a 1987 graduate of West Virginia University and enlisted in the State Police in 1998.
