Agreement is Approved for Hauling Contaminated Soil to Landfill
A federal judge approves a new deal between the state Department of Environmental Protection deal and Freedom Industries to clean up the chemical spill site. The deal sets aside $2.5 million to cover the costs the plan, which still needs to be finalized. The Charleston Gazette reports that Freedom chief restructuring officer Mark Welch’s plan to dispose of contaminated soil from the site at the Charleston city landfill has been approved by both DEP and by Waste Management Inc., which operates the landfill for the city. The permits will allow Freedom to dispose of up to 1,500 tons of contaminated soil at the landfill starting this week.
