Texting and driving ban in effect Friday

Heads up for drivers. The texting and driving ban that state lawmakers passed in March goes into effect on Friday. Texting or using a hand-held cellphone while driving becomes a secondary traffic offense, meaning it can be enforced only if the driver is stopped for something else. Texting and driving becomes a primary offense on July 1. The use of a non-hands free cellphone while driving becomes a primary offense July 1, 2013.
