The Jackson County Sheriff's Department is investigating the death of a small child after being left in a car. Not many details have been released however initial reports say it happened in the Silverton area and appears to be accidental.
State police are still investigating a fatal accident on the West Virginia Turnpike early Sunday morning. A courtesy patrol officer who stopped to assist a broken down tractor trailer was struck by a passing vehilce and killed. It happened at the 50 mile marker in the southbound lane near Pax. The driver stopped and remained at the scene. So far no charges have been filed.
About 244,000 West Virginians -- or about 13.5 percent of the population -- are currently uninsured. The state also ranks high or leads the nation for such chronic health issues as hypertension, heart disease, diabetes and obesity. Although expanding Medicaid may held more West Virginians, state officials are concered about the burden on the state budget. Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin wants more information from the federal government on the recently upheld federal health care law. He's not the only one. Medicaid covers around 330,000 West Virginians, the 12th largest program among the states when measured against overall populations, according to the latest U.S. Census Bureau figures.
Another scam is making the rounds. This time police say it centers on Jury duty. Police locally and across the country have been receiving calls from people who tell them they are receiving calls from someone claiming to be affiliated with the local courts system. The caller claims they had been selected for jury duty and did not appear. The scammer then says a warrant has been issued for their arrest and in order to take care of it they ask for a credit card or bank account number to pay the fine and a social security number to verify identity. Police remind you...don't ever give personal information out to anyone you dont know.
Mark your calendar for August 4th if you would like to volunteer to help clean up Nitro...well at least one section that day. The focus will be on the children's park area that Saturday. Then on going cleanups will continue each Saturday until the end of September as the effort spreads out in other areas. The Nitro Convention and Visitors Bureau is spear heading the effort and say they have been receiving positive support from those who have been donating money for cleaning supplies and things such as flowers and planters to beautify neighborhoods.
Investigators were back at Harris Riverfront Park over the weekend looking for anything that may lead them to the whereabouts of a Huntington woman. Police say Connie Klomp has been missing for a week and her purse and clothing were found in that area last week. Anyone with information is asked to contact Huntington Police.
A plea hearing will be held August 8 for Lincoln County Commissioner Thomas Ramey Jr. The West Virginia County Commissioner is expected to plead guilty to what prosecutors allege, he lied to an FBI agent about absentee ballot applications in the 2010 Lincoln County Democratic primary. Jerry Bowman who was the Sheriff at the time and Donald Whitten who was the County Clerk are awaiting sentencing August 29th for their part in the case.
The family of Craig Keith spoke out over the weekend out about the police chase Friday that ended in Keith being shot and killed by police. Family members say in the past Keith may have made some bad decisions, but he was working to turn his life around. They don't know what went wrong. The 34 year old from Charleston was the man police say was involved in some type of disturbance at Madri Gras Casino and Resort then led police on a chase in Jackson County which ended in the fatal shooting.
A public hearing by the state Public Service Commission September 18 will focus on dealing with how to handle future possible power outages. The hearing comes out of the response by 12 West Virginia utilities to the recent windstorms that left more than a half million West Virginians without power, some for nearly two weeks back in June. Also last week the Commission ordered the 12 to submit, within 30 days, evaluations on the preparedness for and response to those same storms.
Two people from Maryland and two from Pennsylvania dead after a head-on collision in Roane County. It happened Saturday afternoon in the southbound lanes of on Interstate 79 near mile-marker 31 and close to the community of Newton. the exact cause of the accident is unknown. Members of the West Virginia State Police from the Spencer detachment are investigating.
