Is the Matrix getting rebooted!? #WQBENightShow
Warner Brothers is “in the early stages of developing a relaunch of The Matrix,” according to The Hollywood Reporter, and Michael B. Jordan (Creed, Fruitvale Station) is being looked at as a potential star. It’s unknown what format the reboot will take.
The reboot’s treatment will reportedly be handled by Zak Penn, the co-writer of X2, X-Men: The Last Stand, and the story for The Avengers.
The Matrix premiered in 1999 to rave reviews and massive box office, and is now considered one of the most influential action movies of all time. It was written and directed by Lana and Lilly Wachowski, who also helmed the film’s two less-rapturously received sequels, The Matrix: Reloaded and The Matrix: Revolutions. Warner Bros would not comment to THR on whether or not the Wachowskis are slated to return for the reboot.
Keanu Reeves, who starred as Neo, said that he would only reprise his role if the Wachowskis returned. “They would have to write it and direct it. And then we’d see what the story is, but yeah, I dunno, that’d be weird, but why not?” he told Yahoo Movies while promoting John Wick 2.
Fun fact: Will Smith was originally offered the role of Neo in the original Matrix, but turned it down to do Wild Wild West instead.
